The Ming Paintings

This series of works is influenced by the Hsieh Ho dictum of early Chinese philosophy which calls for a living spirit in art, often employed in the production of early porcelain of the Sung, Yuan and Ming Dynasties. Vessels in art traditionally show embedded qualities of safety, fragility, transparency, symmetry, beauty and a timeless sense of presence and place.  They hold memory & emotion and can suggest notions of gender in their form. Painting this series of vessels allowed me to recall the past; fragments of memories; travel in exotic places; cross-cultural influences and spiritual sensibility. By collecting these vessels over many years they have come to form part of my life, and contribute to a more beautiful and fulfilling way of being.
